ATV TRAIL REPORT --Posted on Thursday, March 19 2009
All of the ATV trails and forest roads throughout the Chequamegon Forest are open as of May 1st, this includes the Dead Horse Trail Run (trail #25) on the far E side of Sawyer County. This is a fun trail, very forested...woodsy....and a long trail, 56 miles total. The downside is you need to bring extra fuel, and ride with another ATV...just in case. There is no gas on the Loretta/Draper end, you'll have to take the Tuscobia to Winter to get fuel. Winter is 10 miles to the W on the Tuscobia. Clam Lake, on the other end, has a few campgrounds nearby, a couple of gas station/convenience stores...a nice little community for basic needs. Also through the Chequamegon are trails that run near Moose Lake, and to a few area resorts....great places to stop, (or stay at) get food and gas. Moose Lake is a pretty lake, tucked out of the way of the activity of Hayward. Hayward to Moose Lake is about 20-25 miles by car. Trail # 5 which is west of Hwy S (Moose Lake area) is closed until May 22nd this year. Trail # 36, off of the Tuscobia, near Oxbo, which runs north/south though the Flambeau Forest is open after May 15th. This trail runs alongside Connor's Lake/Lake of the Pines...two nice lakes with great campgrounds. There are other places along this trail for food and fuel too. Again, this trail is in the forest and is a fun one. Talking with Hayward Power Sports 715-462-3674, a few of the trail clubs are really working on trying to get trails from "In the city of Hayward" to connect to "Outside the city/Rest of the county" trails. Hopefully, that will happen this year, we're getting close to achieving this goal. It's been a difficult issue getting consent from private home owners whose property would be crossed as an ATV trail. Currently, you are unable to ride from in the city to outside/rest of the county. The trails throughout the "Seeley Hills" area, these are on Sawyer County land....also are open, heard they're fun, because of the hilly and curvy terrain they cover. There are plenty of places around these trails for gas and food and places to stay. The trails through Bayfield County are open as of May 1st. Washburn County trails are closed until May 31st. Free parking areas to trailer to with trail access include the LCO Casino - from the casino you can go N on trail # 31 to the Seeley Hills area, or S on trail # 30 to the Tuscobia Trail. Hayward Power Sports has a large lot available to anyone - you can access the Seeley Hills system, which if you zigzag far enough N going towards the E, you'll eventually run into Lake Namekagon. Town of Winter/Tuscobia Trail has a parking lot across from the BP gas station and the Tuscobia Trail and is available to everyone. The Ojibwa Park, also along the Tuscobia Trail has camping and also just parking (if you don't want to camp) available. The Ojibwa Park is just 5 miles W of Winter. And, the Tuscobia Trail - a former railroad grade - is a great link for access from one end of the county to the next running east/west, with many smaller trails made available off of it. There are many places to stop for gas/food/drink/lodging along the Tuscobia. Check out our trail map for the county, you'll see any additional trail openings/closings for both ATV's and Snowmobiling. Please contact us with additional questions concerning our trails or our area in general. 1-800-724-2992
