Horseback Riding Trails around Chequamegon National Forest
Tuscobia State Trail
Length – 56 miles. Take your horse on a reclaimed railroad trail, not groomed or surfaced and may be rough in some spots. Users share the trail with motorized vehicles. No fee or pass required.
Sawyer County Forest
Hundreds of miles of logging roads, fire lanes, and open-access trails are available for horseback riding. For forest unit maps, go to www.sawyercountygov.org.
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
Of this 1.5 million-acre National Forest, 123,000 acres are in Sawyer County. Generally, horseback riding is permitted on trails and roads within the National Forest, except during the period of March 15-April 30 every year, and except on trails dedicated for hiking or ATV use. (Of course, don’t ride your horse on a groomed ski or snowmobile trail!) Find more information on special horseback riding areas here and information on horse camping here.
