Get Movin’ in Hayward Lakes

Nestled in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the Hayward Lakes area is a haven of recreation for outdoor enthusiasts. With its expansive trail systems, the area beckons hikers, runners, cyclists, and ATV/UTV riders to immerse themselves in nature’s splendor.

If you are looking for a two-wheeled adventure, the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) oversees over 130 miles of singletrack and 200 miles of mapped gravel routes. The CAMBA system offers trail experiences ranging from easy, flow-style beginner trails to very challenging singletrack, covering terrain in some of the most beautiful woods on earth.  The CAMBA Trail Guide, an overview map of the system, can be found at area bike shops or at the Hayward Information Center.  Maps of individual trail clusters are available for purchase at area bike shops.

For those preferring a paved path, the city offers a 6.6-mile dual use path. This paved path is slightly sloped, is separated from traffic, and has safety signals at road crossings. Parking is available at Hayward Wesleyan Church, the Fishing Hall of Fame, Hayward High School, and the Weiss Community Library.  It’s perfect for a leisurely ride or a family outing.

Bike rentals (road or mountain bikes, conventional or e-bikes) are available at two local retailers, and maps can be found at the Hayward Information Center.

For those looking to explore on four wheels, Hayward’s UTV trails are renowned for their quality and scenic beauty.  With over 200 miles of trails within the county, there is an adventure for every taste and skill level.

The Seeley Hills Loop offers 50 miles of rolling hills through the quiet forests north of Hayward. With trailheads accessible off Highway B and at Hayward Power Sports, it’s a favorite among families and seasoned riders alike.

The Chequamegon National Forest contains over 140 miles of trails. Three separate trail systems with adjoining loops offer an exciting scenic tour of the forest. Trails wind over rolling terrain, with towering forests and panoramic views of meadows and wetlands. Side-by-sides (up to 65″ wide) are legal in the National Forest.

No machine? No problem.  The Hayward Lakes area has multiple retailers that rent UTV’s and some even offer guided trail rides. For additional information, DNR regulations, maps, and more, visit haywardlakes.com.

All of the above trails, plus ski trails, snowshoe trails, shaded gravel roads, and DNR hunter walking trails are available for hikers and runners to explore.  (Just remember to yield the right of way to a motor vehicle, bike, or horse!)  Stop by the Information Center for a map or find one at haywardlakes.com.
